Daniel’s Problem
In D&SS, Daniel’s life has been anything but perfect…and things go downhill from there. In the midst of some pretty harrowing experiences, he learns he has a Heavenly Father who loves him. As you can imagine, he has a hard time believing that.
If there is a loving God, then why has his life been so horrible?
How can a good and all-powerful God allow suffering?
Throughout history, Godly men and women have written libraries on this subject. I won’t attempt to delve into the intricacies of that question here. Rather, I’ll turn to Daniel as food for thought.
Daniel’s character:
-
Is an orphan
-
Has never had a real friend
-
Was only adopted because the family choosing him wanted a live-in servant
-
Is being hunted by an Enemy he never knew existed
But why am I making him suffer?
Because if he had not experienced those hardships, then he would not be a suitable character for what I have planned for him in the Sons and Daughters series. He would not be prepared for the task set before him, and he would not be prepared for the rewards I plan to write into his destiny. He’d be boring. He’d lack character…and that’s the very thing he is designed to be.
I am the author in this scenario, so I have the benefit of knowing that every detail of his life was intentionally “allowed” or “designed” to produce in him endurance and strength. It’s the same for us in the real world. Suffering is an obstacle to God when
we lose sight of (or never had) a concept of life beyond the material, and/or if we don’t believe in a God who transcends time and space. He is the Author of our stories, and he knows what type of people we must become.
“We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” Romans 5:3-5
