Claybank Jamboree
What’s next? Come buy some books at booth 208 at the 2015 Claybank Jamboree in downtown Ozark, AL this Saturday from 9:00-4:00. And, I suppose you can shop around at other booths too. If you have to.
Tentative Title
Thanks to everyone who voted about the sequel to Daniel and the Sun Sword! The consensus is Daniel and the Triune Quest! So, for now at least, that is my working title for the sequel.

What I’ve Been Up To…
I am skipping my usual article this morning in favor of posting a few pictures of the Pediatric Mental Health Conference yesterday. I enjoyed speaking on Play Therapy Techniques for Multiple Populations, and even had time to sell some books to awesome people. Thanks to everyone who stopped by my table!
On Tuesday, I’ll be speaking on Novel Writing to the Ridgecrest Homeschool Co-op, and on Saturday, I’ll be selling books at the Claybank Jamboree. Busy month.

So Many Religions, So Little Time
In Daniel and the Sun Sword, Daniel is met with competing worldviews: Christianity, Humanism, and Incan Polytheism. He quickly figures out which one is based on truth because of the events of the book. But not everyone gets called to go on a supernatural quest that shatters all doubt in a personal God. So, for those of us slogging through the Shadowlands, how do we know which religion/belief system is true? Beyond personal experience, one might say a truth-seeker would need to determine which belief system best fits the evidence. Since anyone can zip on over to Youtube and start listening to a slew of intellectuals teaching on the matter, I’ll spare you my attempt to explain why I believe and simply link you to a playlist on Youtube of said intellectuals. I’ve arranged these in the following order:
- Science
- Philosophy
- Archaeology
- History
- Textual Criticism
- Miracles
Last week to vote!

Crucibles of Belief

Crucibles of Belief
In Daniel and the Sun Sword, Daniel and his friends flee from one trial to another—their decisions bringing them closer to the Father, or closer to the Enemy.
Will Daniel accept Raylin’s help or go off on his own?
Will he accept the quest to find the shards of the Sun Sword or just try to get back to the US?
Will he place faith in the Father or simply rely on himself?
Even outside the realm of fantasy, we face such dilemmas each day. Give into temptation or resist? Blow up in anger or exercise patience? Believe this or believe that? Our response to each of these brings us closer to, or further away from, God.
The choice of what to believe—of what to place faith and trust in—is The Most Important Dilemma we face each day. Each choice point is a crucible: a test or trial producing something new in us. In the age of Google and Youtube, we are constantly bombarded by opinions, information, and entertainment, each impacting our choices (and the decisions of our kids) little by little. Below are a few Crucibles of Belief at war within our culture.
Where do you and your kids fall on these continuums?
Absolute Truth ⇐⇔⇒ Multiple Competing Truths
Destiny and Purpose of Mankind ⇐⇔⇒ Meaninglessness
Science ⇐⇔⇒ Scientism
God-inspired Bible ⇐⇔⇒ Man-inspired Bible
Theism ⇐⇔⇒ Humanism
Are you becoming more like God or the Enemy?

Worldviews and Woozles
Remember in Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day when Tigger bursts up into Pooh’s house spouting nonsense about Heffalumps and Woozles? Pooh, being a bear of “very little brain,” took Tigger’s claims at face value. He was so
convinced, in fact, that he had one of the most horrifyingly phantasmagorical dreams that ever made it to the big screen. A little truth (elephants and weasels), plus a lot of bias (terrifying and powerful honey thieves), and Pooh is now haunted by fear (Heffalumps and Woozles). A silly example, I grant you, but one that has a good lesson: if you are unaware of your presuppositions and how they impact your perception of Truth, your worldview will be created by emotional reasoning, not facts.
One of the great things about writing is that you get to constantly explore issues through the different, and often totally opposing, views of the characters. In previous posts (here, here, and here), I discussed the worldviews of each main character from Daniel and the Sun Sword, and how presuppositions impacted their reactions to the events in the plot.
Christopher Robin may never have convinced Pooh Bear that Heffalumps and Woozles weren’t real. But Daniel, Ben, and Raylin do come to realize how their own subjective biases had distorted their perception of reality, and, by extension, God. It’s a good lesson for all of us: recognize our presuppositions and Truth will be easier to see.
Are you aware of your own presuppositions?
How do they affect your worldview?
