Quarantine-Bored Kids? Let Them Listen to Chapter 1 of Daniel and the Sun Sword

Daniel and the Sun Sword Chapter 1, Read by Yours Truly
If your kids are bored, let them listen to Daniel and the Sun Sword, Chapter 1. I spent WAY too much time putting together some crazy pictures to go along with this video, but it was worth it.
Enjoy!
Daniel and the Serpent’s Abyss News and Updates
The final touches are being added to the Serpent’s Abyss as we speak. Cover is done and will be revealed soon, as well as the revamped cover for Daniel and the Triune Quest. Once all this Covid stuff is behind us, I look forward to a fun book signing!
Here’s a few photos of different ruins featured in Daniel and the Serpent’s Abyss. As you may recall, Newgrange in Ireland was the answer to the first puzzler.
Can anyone guess where this one is?

Christian Fiction Review by Peter Younghusband

Every author and every reader anticipate that a sequel will be just as good or better than the previous….Well, I can say that this is a better story than its predecessor (Daniel and the Sun Sword)….
Lumbatis has shown more of the biblical aspects of who God is, the Trinity, and the Gospel message….
The account where Daniel meets Jesus is powerful but gentle and bypasses the head and ministers straight to the heart….
I know Lumbatis researched the mythology and culture….[and] translated this research into the plot and setting of the novel very well. It is great world building….Makes it very credible and real.

Daniel and the Triune Quest is a blast—a breathtaking thrill ride!
A blast—a breathtaking thrill ride! Tantalizing prose, and…deliciously well-written. I fell head-over-heels for the witty, sarcastic dialogue. Daniel and Ben’s adventures are action-adventure spelled out, along with a hefty dose of drama, comedy, and memorable characters.
The action-packed narrative undoubtedly has the power to lure kids away from video games, and the spiritual messages are core, buoyed by dazzling anime-like visuals presented through…clear-cut learning arcs for the two boys.
Parents…should jump at this one and bookmark Nathan Lumbatis for future reference.

Sons and Daughters News and Puzzler!

Sons and Daughters News and Puzzler!
What’s new? Hmm. Oh, I don’t know. Everything! Editing is underway for Serpent’s Abyss, as is cover design! AND … Daniel and the Triune Quest is getting a new cover! Here are a few teasers:
And now, for the new Photo Puzzlers. Where and what are some of the ruins featured in Serpent’s Abyss?
See if you can figure them out from these new photos…
And, in case this helps, here’s a dead give-a-way. The ruins are also immortalized in a famous song from Clannad.
Any ideas?

Beyond Ourselves
The glass doors slide open and you and your child are met by a tired, old woman. “Welcome to Walmart,” she grunts. You absently smile and walk into the store, drawing your little dear closer as people jostle past you. Where Autumn paraphernalia once hung from the ceiling or lined the impulse-buy shelves, you now see Christmas decorations and flashy toys. Quickening your pace, you make a move towards the pharmacy, but notice resistance. Cringing, you hesitantly glance down and see your child’s eyes fixed on the latest Sofia the First Magical Talking Amulet. With a quick prayer, you tug again. Nothing.
“Can I get that amulet, Mommy?” she asks, letting go of your hand while walking towards the shelf where Sofia’s deceptively innocent grin taunts you from the front of the box, as though saying, “Good luck. She’s mine!”
“Honey, you can’t get that today. Maybe we’ll get it for you for Christmas.”
“Maybe?” Sofia throws back. “This is a limited edition magical talking amulet!”
“But I want it now!”
“We don’t have the money today,” you say quietly. Then with more authority, “Come on, we have to get a lot of things and get home before your dad gets off work.” You grab her hand and begin walking. She follows while craning her neck until the amulet is out of sight.
“This isn’t over,” you imagine Sofia calling to you.
Looking down, you see your daughter frowning in concentration. “But, Grandma gave me five dollars for my birthday last month. Why can’t I use some of that to get the amulet?”
“Yeah, what’s wrong with that?” Sofia mocks from the Sofia the First clearance Halloween toothbrush stand you pass on your way to grab some deodorant.
“Because you already used most of that to buy the Sofia the First Columbus Day Go Fish Cards. You only have fifty cents left.”
“Then what about that Sofia glow-in-the-dark chapstick?”
You feel a migraine coming on. “Not today. We’re too busy, and besides it’s…good grief $20 chaptsick?”
“Healthy lips are happy lips! Can you really put a price on your health?” Sofia winks at you and then blows a kiss to your daughter. She doesn’t notice.
“You’re mean.” She begins to tear up and folds her arms.
Certainly she wouldn’t throw another fit. Isn’t she tired out from the three she just threw in Publix? you ask yourself.
“Not when you give her my Sofia the First Super Star Vitamins every morning,” Sofia laughs.
You ignore the throbbing pain in your head and grab your daughter by the arm. “Let’s go, we’ve got to go get some groceries now.”
“But Mom!” she whines, trailing behind you. “I want that chapst…”
For a moment, the sudden silence comes like a wave of relief. But then you realize your fatal mistake when you see Sofia waving at you from the amulet shelf again. Why didn’t I take the long way around the store?
“It wouldn’t have mattered,” Sofia replies happily. “I’m stocked in the toy, hunting, and craft departments too. Also, there’s a surprise waiting for you on the cereal aisle.”
“I want the amulet!” your daughter suddenly shrieks behind you, pulls away from your hand and throws herself on the ground. After making several wriggling motions, she ends up under the amulet shelves.
“I….WANT…SOFIA!”
With everyone watching, your head exploding, and the growing realization that if you don’t give in, you’re very likely to experience what many psychiatrists are now calling Post-Sofia-the-First Psychosis, you grab the amulet and your flailing daughter and proceed to the checkout line.
The groceries can wait, you think, and then begin planning what to tell your husband about supper.
“It’s only food,” Sofia replies in comforting tones. “At least your darling little girl is happy.”

Let’s be honest with ourselves, even though this is fiction, we’ve all experienced the store tantrum at least once. Kids can be just as materialistic as the rest of us; and, with children becoming some of our biggest consumers…READ MORE.

Words of Eternal Life
John 6:68 “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life.”
Paul writes in Romans that my destiny as a Christian is to be conformed to the image of Christ—to spend my life allowing the Holy Spirit to bend me, mold me, and shape me until I resemble the Son of God. I should, in fact, always be aware of some sin or bad habit that God is targeting for change. Change, however, is hard. After all, as a culture, we do tend toward cynicism and self-centeredness, both of which inhibit my willingness to die to myself and submit to what God wants. So, when He begins putting pressure on me to crucify the deeds of the flesh, I have often squirmed my way to the edge of the Holy Spirit’s presence, where the compelling and louder voice of the flesh eases my guilt by excusing, rationalizing, and watering-down my sins. But when I am honest with myself, I know that God will not settle for this, that He wants total submission and transformation. Christ’s life made that…READ MORE

Unsolicited Advice
Several years ago, I wrote bi-monthly articles for a local magazine’s Good Advice column. I’ve now begun posting these in a new place on my website under a drop-down menu entitled Unsolicited Advice.
I currently have two posted, and plan on posting a new one every two weeks. Here are brief excerpts with links for the first two. Enjoy!
But Be of Good Cheer
Almost everyone I talk to lately seems to be going through something difficult. My grandmother is in failing health and struggles to adapt to life in a nursing home. Relatives watch as a loved one makes poor life decisions. Others struggle with debt and difficult situations with work. My 25-year-old friend suffers from a calcified brain tumor that impairs his vision, balance, and causes nausea every day. There can be no doubt about it, we live in a fallen world and people around us have problems. Jesus even predicts this in John 16 when he says that, “In the world you shall have much tribulation…” His words do not end there, however, and in half the sentence following, he speaks the calming words, “…but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” These are easy words to say, but how can we effectively encourage those around us who are in the midst physical or emotional pain to “be of good cheer”? After talking with several friends and family members, here are a few Do’s and Don’ts about encouraging those who are struggling. READ MORE…
I Don’t Feel Like Loving You…
The honeymoon phase of relationships is wonderful. People usually prioritize the time spent with their loved one, become other centered, self-sacrificing, gentle, and quick to forgive. Even in friendships we see a phase similar to this, wherein each person or couple, caught up in the joy of becoming acquainted with a new and exciting person, finds it easy to put others first. We feel hopeful about the future, and our lives seem filled up with activity and satisfaction.
Loving others who show love to us is easy and fun; it’s like a good business investment with the promise of a good return. But how long do honeymoons last? A week? A month? Maybe even a couple years? It’s only a matter of time, however, until something happens. READ MORE…

Ancient Astronaut Theorists Suggest…
I don’t know about you guys, but I LOVE the Ancient Aliens show on the History Channel. It’s both hilarious and interesting. It’s hilarious because of the crazy guy with the weird hair, the number of times the phrase “As many ancient astronaut theorists suggest…” is said in each episode, and all the speculation. The interesting part comes in because the show’s popularity reflects the opinions of most Americans, which, according to a 2012 National Geographic survey, is that 77% believe there are signs that aliens have visited earth.
But what I’m most fascinated by is how frequently the show uses the alien hypothesis to explain away spiritual beliefs. “No, no. Not gods. Just extremely intelligent, insanely powerful, hyper-dimensional beings who planted you here on this earth and then disappeared and who may or may not come back to destroy you…or help you advance as a species.”
It seems to me that in our era of scientism, such an explanation is sufficiently naturalistic, while still appealing to the universal human fascination for what we don’t understand, while allowing us to avoid any personal responsibility to the divine. Once the supernatural is redefined as simply “super-advanced,” then it’s okay to avoid it, disobey it, fight it.
As I’ve said in Daniel and the Sun Sword, it would stand to reason that the similarities between the major mythologies of the world would indicate that they reflect some element of truth. For the Christian, that truth is mankind’s painful journey away from God, God’s plan to redeem us, and a judgment on evil.
Which is why ancient astronaut theorists suggest you buy my book at a 25% discount! See below for details.

The Olympics
I’m not going to lie. In my household, we’re pretty big Olympics fans. We watch it every night (obsessively). I’m always amazed at the time and effort the athletes devote to their sport. They must LOVE what they do. At least, I hope they do.
Which gets me to thinking about us normal humans, and what we’re capable of. Those athletes have very visible talents, but God has given each of us gifts and talents as well—whether others know about them or not. And every gift is a tool through which you can experience the joy of God, if you will but invite Him to be with you while you USE it. I’ve found that more often than not, the greatest joy arising from using my gifts and talents usually comes when no one is around except me and Him.
This puts me in mind of the conversation between the Artist and the Spirit from The Great Divorce:
Spirit: “[In Heaven] they aren’t distinguished—no more than anyone else. Don’t you understand? The Glory flows into everyone, and back from everyone: like light and mirrors…”
Artist: “Do you mean there are no famous men?”
Spirit: “They are all famous. They are all known, remembered, recognized by the only Mind that can give a perfect judgment.”
In the private times and solitary places, create, practice, write, play, garden, run, cook, sing, build, walk, study…do. Simply because He has put it in you to do so. You are recognized by the only Mind that can give a perfect judgment.

♦ True Freedom ♦
You can’t be free from a problem unless you realize it’s there, and you understand the solution. In Daniel and the Sun Sword, Daniel eventually lets go of his anger, but only after he simultaneously realizes the extent of its toxicity and the freedom that comes through forgiveness. I didn’t understand salvation until the middle of the night at 9 years old when God woke me up, revealed the depth of my sin, and made the necessity of redemption clearer.
In the same way, America was founded by brave souls who understood that depraved men abuse power, and therefore government must be a balance of freedom and accountability. Praise God for their insight and wisdom.
Happy Independence Day!

Last week I had the opportunity to go on WTVY’s Live at Lunch segment to plug the book signing at Red House Bookstore on June 11th.

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. It’s true! Last week, I was sent these pictures from a reader who did a book report on Daniel and the Sun Sword. She dressed up like Gator, Daniel’s obnoxious and barbaric adoptive sister.
I have it on good authority that she made a 103%. And rightly so. Well done!

This tale’s a wild ride with spiritual warfare, monsters, demons, action, adventure, coming of age, orphans, adoption, abuse, and the kitchen sink. This is Raiders of the Lost Ark in Machu Picchu. It’s action/adventure way over the top—great fun.

♦ God Is in Those Moments ♦
It’s easy to read about scary, fearful, or intense things. Sometimes it’s actually entertaining. Some of us even prefer books that are frightening (Stephen King; Dean Koontz). Even if we’re not reading suspense or horror per se, the characters in almost all plots will experience fear and anxiety.
But why do we enjoy it? Heck, how many of us spend our days protecting ourselves and our families against accidents, pain, loss, failure, and death, only to then willingly immerse ourselves into a fictional plot via book or TV which contains those same things?
It’s because of what comes after. Resolution, peace, safety. If you think about it, that’s the truly entertaining part—the moment when salvation arrives, the tide turns, the hero shows up, and evil is thwarted. This resonates with all of us because, regardless of what we say we believe, on a cellular level, we are wired to expect God to work out all things.
Over the next few weeks, look for His hand to “turn the tide.”
Notice the stories playing out in front of you everyday, and don’t forget to
pay attention to the part where help arrives.
God is in those moments.

Nuns versus The Lord of the Rings
In Daniel and the Sun Sword, Daniel finds he can’t save his friends unless he lets go of his anger, cynicism, resentment…lets go of his self. When emptied, he is filled with the Father’s power in a very visible way.
◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊
He looked down at his body; he was almost transparent. A white-hot fire shone from within him like a flame through a lampshade, illuminating his entire being.
It surprised him how natural it felt, like this was his true self. It was as if he finally felt real, like all his anger and distrust had simply been a facade he’d erected for protection.
◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊
This scene, I confess, was inspired by C.S. Lewis’s comments about holiness and glory:
“How little people know who think that holiness is dull. When one meets the real thing…it is irresistible. If even 10 percent of the world’s population had it, would not the whole world be converted and happy before the year’s end?” (Letters to an American Lady)
“It is a serious thing to live in a society of possible gods and goddesses, to remember that the dullest most uninteresting person you can talk to may one day be a creature which, if you saw it now, you would be strongly tempted to worship…” (The Weight of Glory)
And this brings me to my point: when we consider that the way to happiness is through holiness, don’t conceive of the latter as the drab, stodgy, barren existence of a nun. A picture of true holiness is perhaps better illustrated in the heroes of The Lord of the Rings, who are filled with power, goodness, and mystery.
Holiness doesn’t just sit in the pew or kneel in the prayer closet.
It strikes out into the world on adventure.

Halloween and the Other Side
In Daniel and the Sun Sword, Daniel and his friends must break into (what they believe is) the Peruvian underworld to save a friend. Which, of course, is spooky and scary, and a perfect subject for October 31st!
There are many different faces of Halloween (pun intended). A simple Google search will show you that all ancient cultures have some such holiday—even Christian cultures. Despite the differences in these traditions, one thing remains the same: Halloween is about the dead, the other side, and the crossing of the boundary leading there.
But, is the subject of Halloween just tradition? Is it just based on superstition and the ignorance of our ancestors? I mean, there isn’t any real proof that there is life after death, right? I mean, no extra-Biblical evidence, of course. Sure, there are some crack-pot people touting Near Death Experiences (NDEs), but those are easily explainable…oxygen deprivation, or something like that.
Or maybe not. For decades, certain accounts of NDEs have caught the attention of the scientific community because the details rule out simple explanations like oxygen deprivation, hallucinations, dreams, or the like. Many accounts are so baffling that the scientific study of NDEs is its own branch of research now, with doctors being among the loudest voices lending support to the phenomenon.
So, in honor of Halloween, here is one such case. Enjoy!

Do Legends Contain Truth?

Last year I wrote a post explaining that Christian Fantasy (Speculative Fiction) begins by presuming the basics of a Christian worldview and then asking “What if?“. One of the central What if’s of Daniel and the Sun Sword (D&SS), and the Sons and Daughters series as a whole, has to do with the origins of worldwide mythologies: What if every culture’s myths grew out of man’s fallen memory of the one true God and his plan for redemption? No doubt many believe as much, but the fun starts when you try to untangle how those legends developed. (more…)

Poll Results–Nerds.

The results from my book-release poll are in, and here’s what I’ve concluded: a bunch of you are nerds.
I will NOT be giving away $1,000,000.
I will NOT be doing an interpretive dance. Though several of you seemed quite interested in seeing my sister do one so I’ll see if I can talk her into it. She’s a big doofus so it might be possible.
Weird Al was already booked. (If you’re out there, Mr. Weird, and reading my blog, I’d be honored if you could actually come.)
BUT, the other answers I can swing. The majority of respondents wanted: (more…)

I featured the picture of our cat because, seriously, everyone loves kittens. But now that you’re here, I’d be much obliged if you could answer three questions for me. You can select up to three answers for each.
