♦ Fun at Highlands Elementary School ♦
Last Thursday I had the opportunity to speak to the entire Highlands Elementary School student body about Daniel and the Sun Sword, and also got to stop by the gifted classes to do a few writing activities. It was definitely a high point on my writing journey—one I hope to repeat with sequels.
Many thanks to all the awesome kids who bought (and are still buying) copies, and here’s a shout out to all the awesome teachers and the school librarian who invited me. You all were great!

This tale’s a wild ride with spiritual warfare, monsters, demons, action, adventure, coming of age, orphans, adoption, abuse, and the kitchen sink. This is Raiders of the Lost Ark in Machu Picchu. It’s action/adventure way over the top—great fun.

♦ These Days ♦
Been busy with a few speaking engagements over the past couple weeks. I had the privilege of speaking at Troy University a couple weeks ago, though it had nothing to do with writing or my book and more to do with Group Counseling. BUT, like any good salesmen, I didn’t waste the opportunity and sold a few copies! Thanks to everyone who was interested.
This next week I’ll be speaking to Highlands Elementary School about Daniel and the Sun Sword and becoming a writer. All this is to say, “Ain’t nobody got time for writing an article.” So this is all you get.

♦A Word on Love♦
Don’t worry. This isn’t going to be a LONG post on love in honor of Valentine’s Day. That would be sappy and overdone. It’s going to be a short post on love in honor of Valentine’s Day.
There are some things in the world that are depleted the more you use them. Money. Coal. Physical energy. Land. Love, however, isn’t one of those things. The more you love others, the more love you have to give.
I’ve thought about this quite a lot ever since my children began asking the inevitable question: Which one of us do you love more? As any healthy parent knows, the true answer is that you love your kids the same. When you unconditionally love someone, the amount of love you have to give isn’t diminished; it’s actually increased. Why?
- God is Limitless Love, and when you become a vessel for his Love, it is extravagantly given.
- The more you love, the more self-centeredness is chipped away in your heart, and the more your capacity to love is increased.
So there you have it. Not terribly profound, but good to think on.
Love more, and you will be ABLE to love more.

♦ Speculative Faith Post♦
Ms. Rebecca Luella Miller recently asked me to guest post on the Speculative Faith blog, and I was only too happy to oblige. Here is a portion of my article, Christian Fantasy and Magic. At the end of this excerpt, there’s a link to the whole article if you want to read the whole thing.
Christian Fantasy and Magic
Three Stories Filled with Magic
The mob pushed closer to the house, beating on the doors and windows. It was only a matter of time before they broke in and killed us—or worse. One of the strangers stood and walked toward the door. With a nod of his head, the door burst open. He casually raised his hand and a blinding light radiated forward like a shockwave, leveling the men outside. They screamed, clutching at their eyes while blindly stumbling over one another to flee.
***
Priests danced around the fire, muttering dark enchantments. Nothing happened—no fire, no divine light—nothing.
Finally, the wizard stood up. The corners of his mouth twitched with mirth. “Need a little more practice, my friends?”
One of the older priests flung a curse in his direction.
“My, my! There’s no need for that. Don’t bite unless you have teeth. Here, let me show you how it’s done.” The wizard raised his staff into the air and closed his eyes. Barely two heart-beats later, the sky answered. Lightning, wrapped in flames of blue and green, struck the stones behind him. The lifeless bull, the rock altar, the water—they were gone—vaporized by the power of his God.
***
A figure, draped in a black robe wreathed with ebony flames, stood guard by the stone—invisible to all the onlookers. Invisible to all except me. He hovered just above the ground like some disembodied shadow barring my way. Despite their ignorance, the others reacted to his presence—weeping, beating their chests, wailing loudly as if the din alone could make him flee. No, that wouldn’t do it. What lay inside was his, and he would not give it up so easily.
I felt the Power rise up within me, and the dark sentinel immediately blanched. From somewhere in his robes his eyes zeroed in on me. He trembled, giving more life to the dark flames. I held out my hand and took a deep breath. One word burst into my mind. I couldn’t hold it back and shouted it like a battle cry.
“Live!”
The stone split in two and fell away from the cave entrance. Like a stream of dust before a gale, Death was driven up over the mountain and into the open sky, shrieking as though I had dealt him the final blow. But no, that battle was still to come. With a clap of thunder, he was gone.
I let my eyes fall back to the cave. My friend stood in the dusty entrance, bound hand and foot by tattered strips of grave cloth.
“Take those off and let him go,” I ordered those standing nearest me. “He is alive.”
***
What should the Christian author’s attitude toward magic be? In the Chronicles of Narnia, C.S. Lewis writes much of magic. There’s the Deep Magic, the Deeper Magic, the enchantments of various magicians and witches, the curses of dragons, star magic—you get the picture. I have read that not all Christians at the time looked with kindness on his fictional amalgamation of the secret arts and Christianity. I guess this shouldn’t surprise me. Even now, with such a literary giant as our forebear, how many people squirm when we Christian Fantasy writers show them our stories? After all, magic has connotations of supernatural power derived from somewhere other than God. But does it have to?
In my mind, Lewis, and others of his caliber (Tolkien, Lawhead, etc.) redeemed magic to its higher, nobler form—the creative display of God’s power through his children to further the Kingdom. A brief glance at Aslan, Gandalf, or Merlin’s power is all it takes to see how authors can elevate magic from darkly arcane, to holy and vibrant. Of course, to make ourselves feel better, we call this sort of holy power “miracles” when we discuss it in Sunday School. But in reality, the definitions for both magic and miracles include the same core element—supernatural power altering the course of normal events. And when we read Biblical accounts of God intervening in the world, we shouldn’t lose sight of how “magical” they would’ve appeared….READ MORE.

♦ Chapel at Northside Methodist Academy ♦
This past Thursday. I had the privilege of speaking at Northside’s Middle and High School chapel service. It was a blast! I read an excerpt from Daniel and the Sun Sword, spoke about worldview, the part it played in the book, and how we can be ready to intellectually defend the Christian faith. Also sold a few books. Great school!

The Fiercest Fight: Author Interview
Today, I’m happy to interview my friend, Brent King, as he plods along the cyber world on his blog tour to promote his new book, The Fiercest Fight. Links for ordering the book are immediately following the interview, as is a contest to win a free copy of his book! Don’t forget to enter!
In the sleepy town of Astor Crossing, something evil stirs… Have you ever battled a beast? If so, you are not alone. Meet Tristan, a troubled teen who longs for a normal life, the very life that eludes him. When horror beyond his wildest nightmares confronts him, does Tristan have what it takes to survive? It will take all his resources—his wits, his mentors, and his will—to find the wisdom and resolve to win the fiercest fight of his life.
Thanks, Brent, for stopping by. Tell us a little about your book’s story line.
On the surface it’s about a couple teens that stumble upon a werewolf curse. Beneath the surface it’s about how to deal with the beast within.
So, what about your main character, Tristan? What makes him so special?
Tristan isn’t particularly special. He reacts to trouble as I suppose most teenagers would. Yet he is special too—like all teens. He has talents and the same heroic stuff hidden deep inside that you’ll find in most of our youth. Awakening that stuff is the problem.
The inner struggle of the antagonist is often emphasized in books and movies these days. Is that true with your villain? Is there any good in him?
At first I didn’t think so. Yet, as the story progressed, I grew to wonder whether I should hate him or pity him. We are all villains on some level. Consequently, we can learn a lot from them.
Which writers inspire you? Which authors do you admire and why?
Oh my! The list is too long, but it didn’t use to be. When I was young, the authors of the Bible gave me plenty of inspiration for my imagination (they still do). Since then, authors like J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Peter Kreeft, John Eldredge, and Neil Gaiman have added to the vision. Any author that brings me to thoughts I’ve never considered before is a great author.
Are you working on any other books?
I’m well into the rough draft for the sequel to The Fiercest Fight (Wounds of a Werewolf), and almost finished with Fire Cloak, the first novel in a new trilogy about a young boy and his disabled grandfather who find magic cloaks that take them to another world.
Beyond that, I’m working on a post-apocalyptic romance along the lines of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. It will be a theological thriller on how the lost are saved. I like monster tales!
Exciting! Thanks for giving us a peak into your literary world!
