The Fiercest Fight Blog Tour with Brent King

In this Post…

The Fiercest Fight: Author Interview

Today, I’m happy to interview my friend, Brent King, as he plods along the cyber world on his blog tour to promote his new book, The Fiercest Fight. Links for ordering the book are immediately following the interview, as is a contest to win a free copy of his book! Don’t forget to enter!

The Fiercest Fight

In the sleepy town of Astor Crossing, something evil stirs… Have you ever battled a beast? If so, you are not alone. Meet Tristan, a troubled teen who longs for a normal life, the very life that eludes him. When horror beyond his wildest nightmares confronts him, does Tristan have what it takes to survive? It will take all his resources—his wits, his mentors, and his will—to find the wisdom and resolve to win the fiercest fight of his life.

Thanks, Brent, for stopping by. Tell us a little about your book’s story line.

On the surface it’s about a couple teens that stumble upon a werewolf curse. Beneath the surface it’s about how to deal with the beast within.

So, what about your main character, Tristan? What makes him so special?

Tristan isn’t particularly special. He reacts to trouble as I suppose most teenagers would. Yet he is special too—like all teens. He has talents and the same heroic stuff hidden deep inside that you’ll find in most of our youth. Awakening that stuff is the problem.

The inner struggle of the antagonist is often emphasized in books and movies these days. Is that true with your villain? Is there any good in him?

At first I didn’t think so. Yet, as the story progressed, I grew to wonder whether I should hate him or pity him. We are all villains on some level. Consequently, we can learn a lot from them.

Which writers inspire you? Which authors do you admire and why?

Oh my! The list is too long, but it didn’t use to be. When I was young, the authors of the Bible gave me plenty of inspiration for my imagination (they still do). Since then, authors like J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Peter Kreeft, John Eldredge, and Neil Gaiman have added to the vision. Any author that brings me to thoughts I’ve never considered before is a great author.

Are you working on any other books?

I’m well into the rough draft for the sequel to The Fiercest Fight (Wounds of a Werewolf), and almost finished with Fire Cloak, the first novel in a new trilogy about a young boy and his disabled grandfather who find magic cloaks that take them to another world.

Beyond that, I’m working on a post-apocalyptic romance along the lines of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. It will be a theological thriller on how the lost are saved. I like monster tales!

Exciting! Thanks for giving us a peak into your literary world!

Nuns versus The Lord of the Rings

In Daniel and the Sun Sword, Daniel finds he can’t save his friends unless he lets go of his anger, cynicism, resentment…lets go of his self. When emptied, he is filled with the Father’s power in a very visible way.

Daniel at Intipuncu in the sun

◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊

He looked down at his body; he was almost transparent. A white-hot fire shone from within him like a flame through a lampshade, illuminating his entire being.

It surprised him how natural it felt, like this was his true self. It was as if he finally felt real, like all his anger and distrust had simply been a facade he’d erected for protection.

◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊

This scene, I confess, was inspired by C.S. Lewis’s comments about holiness and glory:

“How little people know who think that holiness is dull. When one meets the real thing…it is irresistible. If even 10 percent of the world’s population had it, would not the whole world be converted and happy before the year’s end?” (Letters to an American Lady)

“It is a serious thing to live in a society of possible gods and goddesses, to remember that the dullest most uninteresting person you can talk to may one day be a creature which, if you saw it now, you would be strongly tempted to worship…” (The Weight of Glory)

And this brings me to my point: when we consider that the way to happiness is through holiness, don’t conceive of the latter as the drab, stodgy, barren existence of a nun. A picture of true holiness is perhaps better illustrated in the heroes of The Lord of the Rings, who are filled with power, goodness, and mystery.

Galadriel and Gandalf

Holiness doesn’t just sit in the pew or kneel in the prayer closet.

It strikes out into the world on adventure.

Halloween and the Other Side

In Daniel and the Sun Sword, Daniel and his friends must break into (what they believe is) the Peruvian underworld to save a friend. Which, of course, is spooky and scary, and a perfect subject for October 31st!

There are many different faces of Halloween (pun intended). A simple Google search will show you that all ancient cultures have some such holiday—even Christian cultures. Despite the differences in these traditions, one thing remains the same: Halloween is about the dead, the other side, and the crossing of the boundary leading there. Halloween_Bangladesh

But, is the subject of Halloween just tradition? Is it just based on superstition and the ignorance of our ancestors? I mean, there isn’t any real proof that there is life after death, right?  I mean, no extra-Biblical evidence, of course. Sure, there are some crack-pot people touting Near Death Experiences (NDEs), but those are easily explainable…oxygen deprivation, or something like that.

Or maybe not. For decades, certain accounts of NDEs have caught the attention of the scientific community because the details rule out simple explanations like oxygen deprivation, hallucinations, dreams, or the like. Many accounts are so baffling that the scientific study of NDEs is its own branch of research now, with doctors being among the loudest voices lending support to the phenomenon.

So, in honor of Halloween, here is one such case. Enjoy!

Pam

Guest Post from Author Ashlee Willis

Last year I interviewed Ashlee Willis about her book, The Word Changers. Well, she’s at it again and is here to talk about some of the underlying themes in her new novella, A Wish Made of Glass.

wish made of glass

Deep in a forest glade, the fey folk dance with a young human child. Their kinship is the fabric of Isidore’s childhood. But when her mother dies and her world darkens with sorrow, Isidore finds her belief in the fey folk wavering.

The love of her new step-sister, Blessing, proves an unexpected gift in her time of need. Yet even as their friendship blooms, Isidore begins to see that Blessing is everything she herself has always wanted to be, but is not. Jealousy grips Isidore as she watches this beautiful new sister steal away all she holds dear.

Driven to desperation, Isidore turns to the fey folk once more. She has only one wish to claim from them, one chance to make things right. But she must tread carefully. For wishes, like hearts, are easily broken. And obtaining the one thing she desires could mean destroying the one thing she truly needs.

Hero and Villain: The Same Person?

by Ashlee Willis

I’ve always been fascinated with “the other side of the story.” You know. The dark side.

I loved the movie Maleficent, of which I’m sure most of you are familiar. I adored the book The Winter Prince, which is told from the point of view of Mordred, King Arthur’s illegitimate son. I couldn’t turn pages fast enough to see how the shameless Becky Sharp’s story would turn out in Vanity Fair. I watched, breathless with horror and awe, as Raskolnikov justified his own act of murder in Crime and Punishment. I couldn’t take my eyes off of Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind, though she was horribly selfish and vain.

Although I’m sure many people found these characters much less than admirable, I rather doubt I’m alone in this fascination with protagonists who turn out to be more villain than hero. What is it that causes us to like the unlikable? What makes us so morbidly intent on watching to see what rule these unorthodox characters will break next?

For me, I think it’s that potential for change more than anything else. That mysterious, wonderful miracle that happens when the character’s depth of loathsomeness teeters sideways and flips, and changes into depth of true integrity and honor. Now, of course that doesn’t happen with every evil or selfish character. It doesn’t happen with most of them, in fact. But when it does . . . what a fulfilling moment!

Because villains aren’t born villains. Every person in life, and every character in a story, has the same chances of redemption that everyone else does. Becky Sharp may have led a less privileged life than Amelia Sedley, but her choices of how to behave were nonetheless the same. Maleficent could have chosen to pay back the greed and cruelty that had been shown to her; instead she made the brave choice of love. Cinderella and her stepsisters held very different positions within their household, yet the difference between their actions and hearts was still a simple one: Choice.

Sometimes the path is harder, sometimes it’s easier. But in the end, what it comes down to is a decision. As Dumbledore so succinctly says: “It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”

Isidore is the protagonist in my novella, A Wish Made of Glass. She is also, in truth, the antagonist. I often look at my own life and think just that. I’m the one who gets in my own way. I’m the one who chooses to embrace my insecurities rather than let them go to reach for the freedom God offers. Satan is THE enemy, yes. But he holds no power over me which I don’t give to him. And I give him that power much too often.

Isidore is arguably not a very likable person. She has seen loss and sorrow in her life, and soon begins to see everything as a tragedy, everything as a danger—even the things that are, in fact, blessings. That doesn’t make for a fun person to be around. Perhaps, to some, it doesn’t even make for a fun person to read about.

Yet I always find enjoyment, even fulfillment, in reading and writing about the broken people. The fallen ones, the misled folk living out life in the shadow of doubt and fear and anger. Those people don’t need enemies because, in truth, they are their own worst enemies. What a great sorrow that is. My heart goes out to them. Because I used to be one of them. I know that dark path well.

My poor Isidore may not be someone you’d want to be friends with. Not at first. She makes wrong choices. She sees through a mirror, darkly. She judges others not based upon truth, but upon her own insecurities and anger and loss. Yet her journey is one that, at least in part, I think everyone may be able to understand just a little.

For God’s power and love have no limits. Even when we seek to destroy ourselves, as Isidore nearly does, even when we stumble blindly into every trap the enemy has laid for us, God is there waiting to take our hand and lead us back onto His path. And it’s a beautiful path – even more beautiful and bright to those of us who once knew the darkness, but have made the brave choice to leave it far behind.

So Many Religions, So Little Time

In Daniel and the Sun Sword, Daniel is met with competing worldviews: Christianity, Humanism, and Incan Polytheism. He quickly figures out which one is based on truth because of the events of the book. But not everyone gets called to go on a supernatural quest that shatters all doubt in a personal God. So, for those of us slogging through the Shadowlands, how do we know which religion/belief system is true? Beyond personal experience, one might say a truth-seeker would need to determine which belief system best fits the evidence. Since anyone can zip on over to Youtube and start listening to a slew of intellectuals teaching on the matter, I’ll spare you my attempt to explain why I believe and simply link you to a playlist on Youtube of said intellectuals. I’ve arranged these in the following order:

  1. Science
  2. Philosophy
  3. Archaeology
  4. History
  5. Textual Criticism
  6. Miracles

Crucibles of Belief

In Daniel and the Sun Sword, Daniel and his friends flee from one trial to another—their decisions bringing them closer to the Father, or closer to the Enemy.

Will Daniel accept Raylin’s help or go off on his own?

Will he accept the quest to find the shards of the Sun Sword or just try to get back to the US?

Will he place faith in the Father or simply rely on himself?

Even outside the realm of fantasy, we face such dilemmas each day. Give into temptation or resist? Blow up in anger Worldviewor exercise patience? Believe this or believe that? Our response to each of these brings us closer to, or further away from, God.

The choice of what to believe—of what to place faith and trust in—is The Most Important Dilemma we face each day. Each choice point is a crucible: a test or trial producing something new in us. In the age of Google and Youtube, we are constantly bombarded by opinions, information, and entertainment, each impacting our choices (and the decisions of our kids) little by little. Below are a few Crucibles of Belief at war within our culture.

Where do you and your kids fall on these continuums?

Absolute Truth  ⇐⇔⇒  Multiple Competing Truths

Destiny and Purpose of Mankind  ⇐⇔⇒  Meaninglessness

Science  ⇐⇔⇒  Scientism

God-inspired Bible  ⇐⇔⇒  Man-inspired Bible

Theism   ⇐⇔⇒  Humanism

Are you becoming more like God or the Enemy?

Worldviews and Woozles

Remember in Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day when Tigger bursts up into Pooh’s house spouting nonsense about Heffalumps and Woozles? Pooh, being a bear of “very little brain,” took Tigger’s claims at face value. He was soWoozle
convinced, in fact, that he had one of the most horrifyingly phantasmagorical dreams that ever made it to the big screen. A little truth (elephants and weasels), plus a lot of bias (terrifying and powerful honey thieves), and Pooh is now haunted by fear (Heffalumps and Woozles). A silly example, I grant you, but one that has a good lesson: if you are unaware of your presuppositions and how they impact your perception of Truth, your worldview will be created by emotional reasoning, not facts.

One of the great things about writing is that you get to constantly explore issues through the different, and often totally opposing, views of the characters. In previous posts (here, here, and here), I discussed the worldviews of each main character from Daniel and the Sun Sword, and how presuppositions impacted their reactions to the events in the plot.

Christopher Robin may never have convinced Pooh Bear that Heffalumps and Woozles weren’t real. But Daniel, Ben, and Raylin do come to realize how their own subjective biases had distorted their perception of reality, and, by extension, God. It’s a good lesson for all of us: recognize our presuppositions and Truth will be easier to see.

Are you aware of your own presuppositions?

How do they affect your worldview?

Saving Dreams

In Daniel and the Sun Sword, Daniel receives a dream from the Father that gives him guidance. Is such a direct More than dreamsrevelation to an unsaved person far-fetched?

I’ve heard several missionaries who would attest to it not being so. Don Richardson*, for one, has written extensively on the subject of God preparing unsaved people via dreams, legends, etc. But I want to turn to a few modern accounts that have been verified. More than Dreamsa DVD documentary produced by Vision Video, chronicles the stories of five Muslims who became Christians after Jesus appeared to them in dreams. Three of the testimonies are summarized below:

The Story of Ali

Ali was a devout Muslim from Southeast Turkey, but his battle with alcoholism was so severe that he became abusiveali toward his family, and moved to a different city to protect them from himself. (more…)

What is Daniel and the Sun Sword Really About?

It didn’t take too many years of being a counselor before I started realizing that almost all people, at some point in their lives, struggle with the same questions:

1) Why do bad things happen?

2) If God is good, why doesn’t he intervene immediately to relieve suffering?

3) If I’m a child of God, why aren’t I immune to trials and difficulty?

4) Do my problems mean that God doesn’t love me?

5) What is my destiny and what is my identity?

sad boyFour years ago, when I began writing Daniel and the Sun Sword, I heard these questions posed in various forms by a particular type of client. At the time, I had several orphans and foster-children on my caseload. They were a wounded, confused bunch—wards (sometimes temporary, other times permanent) of the Alabama Baptist Children’s Home, DHR, or the Wiregrass Children’s Home. Their stories were similar: abandonment; neglect; termination of parental rights due to abuse, drugs, mental impairment—you name it. But whatever the reason, the result was the same: loss of identity, fear, and distrust.

It was easy to see these children as being different from me simply because their emotional problems were so pronounced. But fairly quickly, I began realizing that the burning questions they posed were the same ones I had. Only, the positive circumstances of my life had shielded me from the accompanying sense of urgency and desperation experienced by my young friends.

For the Christian, the intellectual answer to these questions jump readily to mind: the Spirit of the Age is at work in the world, destroying, killing, harming, devouring. But the Spirit of God works all plans, all wills, all choices according to his purpose. He will take the seeming triumphs of evil and work them out for the good of those who love him.

But the reason so many, Christian and non-Christian alike, nonetheless struggle when life goes awry is because it often, though not always, takes a lifetime of experiencing God’s presence in the midst of joy and peace,  pain and trials—in short, in the midst of adventure—before the intellectual answers become experiential realities. Unfortunately, that is usually the only way we learn. In light of this, one might ask, “How could I KNOW that God is good even when evil abounds unless I experience his Peace in the midst of evil?” Could we honestly say we would believe it if we never experienced it?

Don’t get me wrong: experiences are important, but they are not everything. They are balanced out, and rightfully interpreted by, Truth. It is my experience that God gives Truth first and experiences second. Truth to prepare the heart, and experiences to verify.

And that brings me back to the point: Daniel and the Sun Sword, I hope, will present many with Truth. Morefamily specifically, I hope it will present Truth to young men and women who desperately need to understand Sonship Theology: that redemption is more than Mercy—it’s Grace in the form of our adoption as sons and daughters of a Heavenly Father. Real, actual, concrete sons and daughters.

It must be more than a metaphor or platitude, tossed casually about in Christian conversation. It must be real.

Daniel and the Sun Sword is fiction. It is NOT a work of theology, and please don’t think that I am attempting to write doctrine. But it does contain Truth: namely, that if you seek redemption, it, and much more, is within your grasp through adoption as Sons and Daughters of God.

Ben’s Problem

War? Famine? Orphans? Evil? Huh?

For Ben, these things are foreign concepts. He’s used to comfort, ease, and plenty. But life gets real pretty fast when he is dragged along on a break-neck journey through a monster infested Peru. The narrow, naive perception of reality he relies on for peace is shattered, and he is forced to choose: risk personal danger to help Daniel, or avoid conflict and let him face peril alone.

For most of those living in developed countries, it’s easy to encase ourselves in a comfortable, distracted existence—one that keeps us insulated from our own cowardice, indifference to the suffering of others, and general depravity.

Bold and Timid

In the past two posts (which you can find here and here), I discussed the necessity of hardships (1) for the formation of true character and (2) as a means of bringing us to the end of our self-will. To this I would add that hardships are often designed to make our weaknesses evident, and usually require us to act in courageous, other-centered ways.

How have your responses to trials enabled you to overcome fear and die to self?

Raylin’s Problem

Raylin and Coricancha smallRaylin is a cynical, no-nonsense, I’ll-believe-it-when-I-see-it type of girl. As you can imagine, this causes problems when she and the others are pursued by a supernatural Enemy with seemingly limitless power. She is quickly faced with the dilemma of either trusting Daniel’s Heavenly Father for help, or betting everything on her own strength and cleverness.

Daniel’s Problem

The FatherIn D&SS, Daniel’s life has been anything but perfect…and things go downhill from there. In the midst of some pretty harrowing experiences, he learns he has a Heavenly Father who loves him. As you can imagine, he has a hard time believing that.

If there is a loving God, then why has his life been so horrible?

How can a good and all-powerful God allow suffering?

Throughout history, Godly men and women have written libraries on this subject. I won’t attempt to delve into the intricacies of that question here. Rather, I’ll turn to Daniel as food for thought.
