The Mythology of DTQ Part IV

As you may recall, I’ve previously written on various mythological characters who show up in Daniel and the Triune Quest. There was the Super Hot Surya, Ravanna the Weirdo, and Shakti the Uber Feminist. I now continue this most excellent series by introducing Shiva, the third god of the Trimurti.

In Hinduism, three gods outrank all the others—Brahma the Creator, Vishnu the Preserver, and Shiva the Destroyer. Except for when they don’t. As in the case of Shakti, who sometimes is the all in all of everything, even when she isn’t. Remember?  If this doesn’t make sense to you, then congratulations. You finally understand Hindu Mythology.

Anyway, Shiva’s role in the Trimurti is to…is to…um…well, it’s complicated. If you read his page on Wikipedia, you’ll leave quite confused.

Divine Destroyer and Recycler of the Universe? Sure.

Oh wait…also sometimes creator and sustainer instead of those lazy bums, Brahma and Vishnu—oh…okay.

Fierce and scary? Why not?

But also NOT fierce or scary, okay? So just deal with it.

Divine yogi? Naturally.

Did I mention he’s also nothingness? Oh boy.

Like every other god in Hinduism, Shiva incarnated himself into different avatars throughout the ages. Through these avatars, he accomplished various feats and took on different roles, which maybe muddied the waters a bit. No matter how you slice it, though, Shiva is a complex god whose roles are considered both good (destroys illusions, paving the way for beneficial change) and evil (literally destroys the universe).

In Daniel and the Triune Quest, he shows up as an incarnation of the Enemy, and the Master of Shakti. He relishes his role as destroyer—which seems fitting. Luckily, Daniel, Ben, and Gabriela who belong to a different God whose nature is trustworthy, loving, and fatherly. Who doesn’t have to destroy to bring life, but is one who gave up everything to so that we might have HIS life.

DSS in Top 100 Twice

One thing you should know about authors…we obsessively check the sales rankings of our books on Amazon.

So, naturally, I was happy when my obsessiveness paid off this past week when Daniel and the Sun Sword was in the top 100 for its primary category…twice! Hooray!

Every author and every reader anticipate that a sequel will be just as good or better than the previous….Well, I can say that this is a better story than its predecessor (Daniel and the Sun Sword)….

Lumbatis has shown more of the biblical aspects of who God is, the Trinity, and the Gospel message….

The account where Daniel meets Jesus is powerful but gentle and bypasses the head and ministers straight to the heart….

I know Lumbatis researched the mythology and culture….[and] translated this research into the plot and setting of the novel very well. It is great world building….Makes it very credible and real.

Daniel and the Triune Quest is a blast—a breathtaking thrill ride!

A blast—a breathtaking thrill ride! Tantalizing prose, and…deliciously well-written. I fell head-over-heels for the witty, sarcastic dialogue. Daniel and Ben’s adventures are action-adventure spelled out, along with a hefty dose of drama, comedy, and memorable characters.

The action-packed narrative undoubtedly has the power to lure kids away from video games, and the spiritual messages are core, buoyed by dazzling anime-like visuals presented through…clear-cut learning arcs for the two boys.

Parents…should jump at this one and bookmark Nathan Lumbatis for future reference.

HES 5th Grade Linc

On Wednesday, March 20th, I had the wonderful pleasure of teaching the Highlands Elementary 5th Grade Linc students about writing books.

We had a blast!

During the last half of the class, they all tried their hand at planning out stories they would like to write, which they then shared with the class. These kids were brilliant and creative, and an awesome audience!

Thank you Mrs. Harden for the invite!

My only regret is that I have only one picture to share. But, one is better than none…

200 Page Benchmark/DTQ Companion Video

Today, this 9th day of February, in the year 2019, I’m proud to declare that I, Sir Charles Nathan Fitzherbert Abernathy Lumbatis have written 200 pages in the novel, Daniel and the Serpent’s Abyss (DSA).

DSA 200 Pages

Fitzherbert Abernathy aren’t really my middle names, but it sounded more noble.

I know, I know. You might be thinking, “Nathan. Big deal.” But look, People, I don’t have loads of time to write. So reaching the 200 page mark means I’ve got only approximately 100 pages to go before Daniel and the Serpent’s Abyss is done.

Well, the first draft anyway.

So, in celebration, I am uploading a companion video I created for Daniel and the Triune Quest. This was created as a background for presenting the book at schools and is intended to accompany a script. So, while part of the progression might not make sense, I hope you enjoy the music and visuals of the characters and places in India which inspired the story.

Enjoy!

The Mythology of Daniel and the Triune Quest: Part III

Now continues my blog series featuring notable characters from Indian mythology who are (more importantly) immortalized in the pages of Daniel and the Triune Quest. You can find the other posts HERE and HERE.

As I’ve noted in the past, getting definite answers from the Hindu mythos is no easy task. But, here’s me next attempt. In 500 words or less, here is everything you need to know about…

Shakti, Goddess of…um…Feminism, I guess?

shakti statue

Shakti, or शक्ति, literally means “power, ability, strength, might, effort, energy, capability. Shakti is both a goddess and a primordial cosmic energy pervasive throughout the entire universe.

As a goddess, she is the personification of feminine creative power. In Shaktism, she is the ultimate, Supreme Being. Unlike, say, in Shaivism, where that lout Shiva gets all the credit.

shiva women's lib

Naturally, there is no one “being” who is Shakti, because Hinduism LOVES to recycle gods and goddesses (and hopefully PLASTIC STRAWS).

So, get ready for this, Shakti often manifests as the goddesses Tripura Sundari or Parvati. Oh, wait. And also, Ganga, Yamuna, Kamakshi, Kanakadurga, Mahalakshmi, Mahasaraswati, Meenakshi, Manasa, Yellamma, Poleramma, Gangamma, Perantalamma, Durga, and Kali.

shakti goddesses

I mean, because…you know…why not?

Shakti is the divine, feminine counterpart to Shiva, and this is more or less how she shows up in Daniel and the Triune Quest. When Daniel and Ben reach India, Shakti presents herself as a goddess, but subservient to the Enemy in the form of Shiva.

And, instead of being motherly, Shakti is in her more…shall we say…aggressive forms as a goddess of destruction and judgment. Yay!

In the book, however, her true form is one of the key surprises. So, what are you waiting for? Pick up a copy of Daniel and the Triune Shield to see how Daniel and Ben deal with her bad attitude and split-personality.

What’s Your Plot?

This weekend, my wife and I were asked to share our testimonies with our Sunday School class. This got me thinking: if I was a character in a book, what would the plot for my spiritual life look like?

How have I grown (or not, for that matter)?

What problems have I overcome?

Where is the Author taking me?

Should I be more mature than I am now?

It’s made me think hard about my spiritual growth over my meager 36 years, which has been a good exercise. I’ve written out the outline of my growth below, and I challenge you to evaluate your own spiritual growth as well. It’s humbling (and sometimes surprising) to recognize that even in times that seem slow or monotonous, God is at work preparing your for the next chapter.

My Character Arc So Far…

Childhood: God wakes Nathan up in the middle of the night and shows him his sin. Nathan repents and his nominal faith becomes genuine saving faith.

Theme: Salvation

Early Adolescence: Nathan fears he is isn’t truly saved and learns about the certainty of salvation.

Theme: Certainty of redemption.

Mid-Adolescence: Nathan struggles with acceptance and self-worth (like every teenager) and God teaches him about identity and self-worth in Christ.

Theme: Identity as a Son of God

Late Adolescence: God does not allow Nathan’s uncertainty about the future prevent moving forward; he opens the door for college and kicks Nathan through.

Theme: Testing Faith

Early Twenties: Nathan gets married and starts a career. He learns that despite his insecurities, he must lead, serve, and prioritize that person above his own interests and feelings, and that he also must help others grow closer to God through counseling—all despite his still being a work in progress. He is overwhelmed.

Theme: Recognition of his need for God to fill him everyday.

Late Twenties/Early Thirties: Nathan and his wife move home and start a family. Nathan learns what true fear is and must learn to trust God with not only his life, but the lives of his family.

Theme: Faith in God’s promises

Present: Nathan must recognize that he does NOT have everything figured out and “together,” and is put in situations requiring him to exercise his faith in God’s goodness even when life is chaotic and the future is uncertain. Old lessons about trust and identity as a child of God are learned in a deeper way.

Theme: Dependence on God and recognition of personal limitations.

First Fruits of Resurrection

But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. (1 Corinthians 15: 20-22)

A theme of death and resurrection is woven throughout Daniel and the Triune Quest because it is a central tenet of Christianity, but also because it is something that resonates within all of us. We are hard-wired to hope that our aging, sickly, ever-failing bodies can’t be all there is—that there must be something more.  We all long for a new, immortal, incorruptible form.

Praise God that our belief and hope is not in vain, and that we will follow our Savior through death and into Life!

If you’ve taken a gander at my homepage lately, you’ll have noticed the look has changed a bit. I linked my new counseling website (nathanlumbatiscounseling.wordpress.com) with my writing website. Head on over to take a look.

This will probably seem lame to you all, but it never gets old to me. I was walking through Barnes and Noble last night and stumbled across Daniel and the Sun Sword mixed in with other books in the Young Adult section. Not in the Local Authors section, mind you. In the “Real Young Adult Books” section. It gave me a little thrill.

 The Olympics and Humility

The Olympics are amazing to me. Olympians dedicate a huge portion of their lives to training, and then put themselves on display for the world to critique. When they do well, it’s awesome. When they make mistakes, it’s devastating. Nathan Chen is one such athlete. His ability is far ahead of his peers, but Olympic nerves got the better of him.

In watching such performances (and mistakes) unfold, I often wonder what the Lord’s plans are.  He hates pride; surely he orchestrates such “falls” to bring people to the end of themselves, where they can recognize their need for Him. I have no idea if Nathan Chen is a Christian, but it will be interesting to find out if his failures drive him closer to God, or toward self-reliance. I guess we’ll find out in the 2022 Olympics.

In the mean time, watching his story has challenged me to be wary of pride and self-reliance. We are all Vessels, nothing more. What we choose to be filled with determines if we are destined for nobility or destruction.

What are you a Vessel for? Self or God?

Better Than Its Predecessor. Takes This Series To The Next Level. You Won’t Be Disappointed.
on September 15, 2017

Wow! My husband and I couldn’t put this book down. It sure got our hearts pumping! Exciting, surprising, inspiring — but also arresting. It made me stop and think about the realities of God’s purpose for our lives, the very real “battles” we face, and His power & strength available to us in the midst of it all. Rich imagery. So good!

Re-reading Old Favorites and Book 3

The past six months have been INCREDIBLY busy and hectic. There’s been a book release, major changes at my old practice, moving into a NEW practice, a blog tour in the midst of that…oh, and let’s not forget Thanksgiving and Christmas. Did I mention I also have kids and a wife?

All that is to say, I haven’t been the most attentive blogger/author. Hopefully that can all change now and things will quiet down. Dear God please.

Daniel and the Triune Quest

Blog Tour and Giveaway

Merry Christmas!

Head on over to Saturday’s Blog Tour site to see the secret word and read my guest post. Unfortunately, there was a slight confusion and the same article from Lorehaven (The Wild Spirit) was posted there. BUT, the secret word is correct.

Thanks, Ms. Cole, for allowing me to be featured on your site!

Additionally, all the secret words are now posted in the next section below.

Never fear, though! Here is the Character Interview with Daniel and Ben that was slotted to appear there. Enjoy!

Interviewer:  Today, we are interviewing Daniel and Ben Jones from Nathan Lumbatis’s Sons and Daughters series. Welcome!

Daniel: Hi.

Ben: Thanks! This is so cool. I’ve never been interviewed before. It makes me feel important.

Daniel: You’re not. Don’t let it go to your head.

Ben: Pfft. Nerd.

Interviewer: : Okay guys! Let’s get started. If you had a free day with no responsibilities and your only mission was to enjoy yourself, what would you do?

Daniel: That’s easy. Probably sleep. Play video games. Sleep again. Maybe kick around a soccer ball until my next naptime.

Ben: You’re so lazy. I’d probably ride my bike around the neighborhood, chill out with my dad. And maybe kick Daniel a couple times.

Interviewer: Classic teenagers. You two seem like you’ve been brothers your entire lives. That’s great. Next question.

What impression do you make on people when they first meet you?

Daniel: Uh, this got deep real fast. It’s kinda starting to feel like a homework assignment. I don’t know. Maybe that I’m an awesome soccer player.

Ben: How would people know you play soccer when they first meet you unless you’re bragging about it?

Daniel: Like you’re some interview expert. All right, what’s your answer?

Ben: Well, I hope people think I’m nice and helpful. And maybe cute with an irresistible smile.

Daniel: Such a doofus.

Interviewer: Well, I’m sure you both make a good impression wherever you are.

What was your favorite part in Daniel and the Triune Quest?

(Daniel and Ben look at each other)

Ben: Favorite part? The end when we were home and still alive. Do you know what we went through?

Daniel: Yeah. It wasn’t fun. Although, there was one part in the very beginning where I was asleep. That was awesome. But everything else stunk. Oh, and when I played soccer and totally beat Ben right before everything went downhill—it was awesome. That was your favorite part, right, Ben?

Ben: No. But I did like it when you were asleep and I didn’t have to listen to your obnoxious comments.

Interviewer: Okay, fine. What was your least favorite part of the book?

Daniel: I don’t think I’m allowed to say. It’ll ruin the suspense, and I’d probably get grounded. But, duh, it’s the part when that really, really bad thing happens. You know… (nods at Ben).

Ben: Do you really have to ask? I mean…could there be anything worse? It was literally the worst moment in my life. Kind of insensitive of you to ask, by the way.

Daniel: Yup.

Interviewer: Sorry! Geez. It’s a standard interview question. I’ll try to be more sensitive in the future.

How’s this one: What do you suppose God thinks of you?

Ben: Hmm. Well, even though he lets us go through some tough times, I’m sure he loves me. I guess he thinks of me as his son.

Daniel: Same.

Interviewer: You don’t want to add anything, Daniel?

Daniel: Nope. I’m his son and he loves me. I think that answers the question pretty well.

Interviewer: Okay. No sense beating a dead horse. In Daniel and the Triune Quest, you both have an experience with the Son, the second person of the Trinity. What was that like?

Ben: Ha! It was overwhelming in every way you could possibly imagine.

Daniel: I felt like I was plugged into an electrical socket. But, you know… I didn’t mind it.

Ben: Or like you were standing next to a star and any second you were just going to be eradicated by its power.

Daniel: Exactly. It was good, though. Better than good. It was probably the best experience of my life. I guess I’d say that was my favorite part of the quest, now that you mention it.

Ben: Yeah. If I could’ve just stayed with him…but, well, I asked him if I could and he said no. That’s the whole point of life though, right? To get back to him?

Daniel: I think so. But wait, you tried to stay? What about me?

Ben: I came back, didn’t I? Can you blame me for trying?

Daniel: Yes, watch me. I’m blaming you right now.

Ben: Aw, you would’ve missed me. Poor wittle Daniel would’ve been all awone.

Daniel: I would’ve missed laughing at your pathetic soccer skills.

Ben: So mean.

Interviewer: Your experience with him sounds amazing. Next question: What do you like about being brothers?

Daniel: Ugh! Not more deep stuff! Can’t you ask me about my favorite video games or movies or something?

Ben: What Daniel means is, he loves sharing a room with me because now he doesn’t feel so lonely. And becoming my brother gives his life the meaning he was always looking for. It’s the best thing that’s ever happened to him. Right, Daniel?

Daniel: (Rolls his eyes) More like, the best thing about being your brother is that standing next to you makes me look taller and hotter, and more girls notice me.

Ben: All except Gabriela, huh?

Daniel: Hey! What the heck, man? Way to take it too far!

Interviewer: My goodness. For those who don’t know, who is this Gabriela?

Ben: Oh, you better let me answer this one. If Daniel tries, he’ll start blushing and get all giggly.

Daniel: What the—

Ben: Gabriela is this girl we met in Peru during our first quest. She’s really pretty and nice, and super brave, and Daniel’s got a crush on her. But now she’s off serving the Three somewhere and doesn’t have time for dating.

Daniel: I’m going to kill you. As soon as we’re alone, I’m calling one of the Enemy’s monsters and inviting them over to eat you for lunch.

Ben: Ha! You’re blushing. That was too easy. I win!

Daniel: (Folds his arms and glares back)

Interviewer:  Well, she sounds lovely. Adoption or no, you boys sure do act like real brothers. While we’re on the subject of supporting characters in the book, how is your ex-adoptive sister, Gator?

Daniel: Huge.

Ben: Probably clipping her Aunt Barf’s toenails again.

Interviewer:  (Chuckles) Yes, well…do you think she is doing well? For those who don’t know, it’s been 8 months since her father lost custody and she’s been living with her Aunt Barf. Unfortunate name, really.

Ben: Let’s not lose sight of the fact that her dad lost custody because he allowed her to beat me and Daniel up, and he tried to turn Daniel into a slave. So, you know, go easy on the sympathy. But, when she popped in at the end of the book, she looked more like a normal human, so that’s good.

Daniel: Ben, man…have a little compassion. She did look better, though. Her eyes had less of that “I’m going to pound you into the dirt” kind of look, and more of a “I think I just had a feeling” look.  I think she’ll turn out okay. Living with Aunt Barf is probably helping her realize how a normal home is supposed to work. Hopefully.

Ben: I wish I had an Aunt Barf.

Daniel: Aw. Me too. That’d be hilarious.

Interviewer: Okay. Last question. But, I have to say, it’s a serious one. It was clear at the end of the book that the Enemy has some ominous things planned for the world. How will you focus on saving Raylin when so much hangs in the balance?

Ben: Uh, I don’t even know how to focus on my math homework, much less balancing Raylin and the world. So, I have no idea. We’ll just do what we have to do, I guess.

Daniel:  Yeah. We have to save Raylin in order to save the world, anyway, so… it’s all the same. Rescuing her, beating up a monster, defeating the Enemy—the Three will work it all out.

But, you know, these quests usually begin and end with some nasty monsters popping up. It’s not like we have a choice but to focus on defeating whatever’s trying to kill us in the moment. I imagine the quest for Raylin will be the same. Sorry world. If it’s between saving you and blasting an oozing demon that wants to eat me, I’m going to handle the demon first.

Ben: Like any monster has tried to eat you! It’s me they go after, Daniel. Every time!

Daniel: Not true! They try to….No. You’re right. You’re the one who all the monsters try to eat. Yep.

Interviewer: You guys are hilarious. It’s been a pleasure picking your brains for these ten minutes or so. Let’s do this again sometime after your next quest.

Ben: Sure.

Daniel: Bring food.

Ben: Good idea! Yeah, bring pizza.

Interviewer: I’ll see what I can do.

Head on over to Friday’s Blog Tour site to see the secret word and read my guest post at the Speculative Faith website. Here’s an excerpt…

 The Wild Spirit

(or Zombie Christianity)

(Random Sappy Christian Movie or Book Scene)

“Good afternoon, Timmy.” Mr. Heartsworth waved to Timmy from his garden, his face framed by the red roses he was planting in the dark, rich earth. “How was school today?” He stood and ambled to the fence, his knees creaking with each step.

Timmy shook his head, his curly, blond hair bouncing as he did. “Not good. Anger got the best of me again, Mr. Heartsworth. Kicked a teacher in the shin and stole a candy bar from a friend. I wish I wasn’t so bad! If I don’t get a handle on myself, I’ll probably end up being a drug-dealer, atheist, and maybe a human trafficker. What is wrong with me, Mr. Heartsworth?”

The old man brushed off dirty hands and waved for Timmy to follow him into the garden. With one quick movement, he took his phone out of his pocket, opened Spotify, and turned on Bill and Gloria Gaither’s Just As I Am.

Head on over to Thursday’s Blog Tour site to see the secret word and read Peter’s interview with me. Here’s a snippet to whet your appetite…

What inspired you to write the Sons and Daughters series?

I work a lot with children and teenagers who come out of broken homes, many of whom have been adopted or were in foster care at some point. One thing they all have in common was a hunger for identity—a place to belong to, a family heritage to call their own, a history they can be plugged into. Really, that’s a desire we all have, it just seemed emphasized in these children. And, ultimately, that need is fulfilled in salvation, in our adoption into God’s family. That need and fulfillment were the inspiration for Sons and Daughters.

How would you describe the Daniel and the Triune Quest in a text message?

That’s hard! Probably:

Daniel and the Triune Quest Blog Tour and Giveaway

Head on over to Wednesday’s Blog Tour site to see the secret word and read Christianity and Mythology: A Reprise

Those who were around for the release of my first book,  Daniel and the Sun Sword, will remember that I wrote about the subject of Christianity and Mythology then. I decided to expand on this topic for the release of the sequel in hopes to further explore the traces of Christianity sprinkled throughout worldwide mythologies.

Speculative Fiction begins by presuming the basics of a Christian worldview and then asking “What if?“. One of the central What if’s of Daniel and the Triune Quest, and the Sons and Daughters series as a whole, has to do with the origin of worldwide mythologies: What if every culture’s myths grew out of man’s fallen memory of the one true God, his plan for redemption, and the rebellion of dark angels? Wouldn’t there be traces of truth and the thread of redemption in those ancient stories?

The action-packed narrative undoubtedly has the power to lure kids away from video games, and the spiritual messages are core, buoyed by dazzling anime-like visuals presented through…clear-cut learning arcs for the two boys.

Parents…should jump at this one and bookmark Nathan Lumbatis for future reference.

So good!

Is There a Personal God?

Daniel and the Triune Quest takes place mostly in a rural Indian town steeped in Hinduism. If posed with the question of whether or not there is a personal god, interested and invested in the daily lives of his/her worshipers, and loving those followers with an unconditional love, a typical Hindu will likely answer with a resounding “No.”

Hinduism is like a complicated tangle of multiverses with good and evil being ambiguous, gods and goddesses having (at least) dual personalities, three versions for every myth, and a dreadful uncertainty at its core in the form of the karmic circle.

~  The secret word is “MUST” ~

Part of Daniel and Ben’s mission while in India is to share about their personal experiences with the Three–the Father, the Spirit, and the Son. Their testimony is foreign to their new Indian friends, but the Truth of a personal, loving God resonates within them.

Most people don’t have earth-shaking spiritual experiences like Daniel and Ben which shatters their spiritual doubt. But, the yearning in all of our hearts for a deeply personal relationship with God is evidence that there is an object of that yearning in existence. C.S. Lewis sums it up best when he says:

“Creatures are not born with desires unless satisfaction for those desires exists. A baby feels hunger: well, there is such a thing as food. A duckling wants to swim: well, there is such a thing as water.”

To this we could add:

Mankind desires intimacy with Divinity: well, there is such a thing as a Personal God.

Thanksgiving

I’m thankful for many things in my life: Jesus, my family, friends, career, etc. But most of all (and more specifically) I’m thankful that instead of simply saving me from death and judgment, God also granted me the right to be a literal Son of God—a coheir with Christ.

“And I will be a father to you, And you shall be sons and daughters to Me,” Says the Lord Almighty.

What are you thankful for?

DTQ and DSS in Top 100 in Amazon’s Action and Adventure!

This past week, I was thrilled to discover that both Daniel and the Triune Quest and Daniel and the Sun Sword were in the top 100 in their primary Amazon category (Action and Adventure).  Thanks!

Character Spotlight: The Enemy–What Did He Hope to Gain?

Character Spotlight: The Enemy—What Did He Hope To Gain?

∞I would love this post to result in discussion, so please comment.∞

I’ve always been intrigued as to what the Enemy hoped to gain by rebelling against God. There are a stream of questions that pop into my mind when I consider this.

Like us, were the angels limited in their ability to understand God’s omnipotence?

Did the Enemy truly believe he could supplant God?

Did he believe there would be no penalty for rebelling?

Did he think he could hide his pride from God’s omniscience?

Is he much more powerful than I think, and trusted he could overthrow the Most High by combining his power with that of a host of lesser angels?

Or, did he hope that God would simply abandon this world so that he could become its god?

I am exploring this throughout the Sons and Daughters series as a whole. Of course, I DON’T PRETEND TO WRITE DOCTRINE, so please no backlash. What the Enemy thought is only briefly explored in scripture, and so we are left to engage in conjecture.

Personally, I think rebellion is only logical if the Enemy truly believes he had something to gain. But, I doubt he thought he could overthrow God. With no hope of victory in the sense of “ousting” God from his place in Heaven, that leads me toward the abandonment theory: “I’ll make mankind in my own image and God will move on, leaving me to rule the earth in his place.”

I guess the Enemy didn’t realize how invested in us God is.

What are your thoughts?

Literary Losers: DTQ Edition

Here’s a bit of ridiculousness for the kids.

That’s right, folks. It’s the next installment of Literary Losers, where I interview a villain from DTQ.  The audio malfunctioned during recording, but we made do as best as we could. Enjoy!

Why Do People Change?

Why do people change for the better? And how? What makes them stop, realize they’ve done something mean, selfish, or insensitive, and decide to do something different? Two things: personal loss, which stinks; and love, which is both wonderful and terrifying. Personal loss, whether something simple like being grounded, or something worse, like losing a job or a friend, can lead a person to recognize mistakes. It naturally makes a person evaluate whether or not they did something wrong to make their life so unpleasant. It is therefore for their benefit to change.

Love—love is a different story. It’s dreadful to see someone you truly love suffer. So, at times, you might change in small ways for their benefit… to make them feel better even when doing so is a problem for you. For example, you might change how you say, do, or think something so the feelings of the person you love are spared. But sometimes love is so strong that we might be willing to put someone or something ahead of ourselves entirely. You might give your time, material possessions, energy, comfort, even your life, for the sake of the one you love.

It was with these thoughts in mind that I sent Daniel and Ben on their next quest. How would they have changed roughly eight months after their initial life-altering adventure? What choices would Daniel’s devotion to the Father lead him to make, and how would this affect Ben’s own spiritual growth?  And what would their friendships with each other, Raylin, and Gabriela make them willing to do? Not to mention, what sort of poor choices would two teenage boys make that would naturally lead to some soul searching? They say you should get your heroes stuck up in trees and then throw stones at them. When both love for others and good old-fashioned teenage mistakes are in the mix, there were no shortages of trees, and I happened to find one really big stone.

I hope you enjoy the story and that it makes you reflect on the nature of the greatest Act of Love in history.

DTQ Release Party is Here!

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the release party today. Just in the way of preparation, I’m re-posting the Literary Losers video from the Daniel and the Sun Sword release event. It’ll get everyone warmed up for the next installment today around 2:00.

Character Spotlight: Daniel

In Daniel and the Triune Quest, Daniel’s pride and lack of empathy causes problems in his relationship with Ben. As in any relationship, healing that breach requires a great deal of humility and communication.

Have pride and self-centeredness wreaked havoc on your relationships?

Is God calling you to apologize in humility to those you’ve hurt so that the relationship can be healed?

Daniel and the Triune Quest Trailer

Praise for Daniel and the Triune Quest

Christian Fiction Review by Peter Younghusband

Better Than Its Predecessor. Takes This Series To The Next Level. You Won’t Be Disappointed.

So good!

DTQ Release Party: TWO Days Away

Only two days left until the DTQ release party. Hope to see you all there! In the meantime, here’s a quick word from Hurricane Nate:

Character Spotlight: Ben

In Daniel and the Triune Quest, Ben finds that bitterness and anger isolate him from his friends when he needs them the most. It’s only when he is willing to let go of his resentments that he is able to receive help and fulfill his destiny.

Have you allowed resentment to isolate you from God and others?

Are you willing to forgive so you can grow closer to God and accomplish His purpose in your life?
